Capstone Ideas

1) My main idea and main focus is to create an advertising campaign that incorporates probably 2-3 mediums. These mediums will probably be a website, print, and/or a video. I would love ideas on what the subject of my advertising to be, either to make up a business or product or to stick with something real. With this showcase I'd like to display my skills to get a job at an Advertising and PR firm somewhere in the city. My main inspiration for this was Hirons&Company located on New York Street. www.hirons.com

2) My second idea is to create a short documentary on an influential topic that is locally based. Although I have been brainstorming I have had no great revelation as to what the topic will be. I will probably use one of the two other ideas. I am inspired to do a documentary more so than a film because of Professor Edgar's influence in his documentary class.

3) I could also just focus on promoting my cousin's professional photography business. They're only means of promotion is through Facebook, so I could create a website with a gallery and post video blogs of their interviews to promote their business. They already have a lot of material to shift through and organize so this project would take a lot of work. They also live in Illinois which could create some scheduling and time problems. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lewis-Sisters-Photography/166869120007757

  1. I had a similar idea to work on a local documentary. I think the real challenge is thorough planning each day of shooting or it can all be for nothing. in Edgar's class I had a good idea but the execution was the hardest part. I like your first idea of incorporating multiple mediums.

  2. I think that the first idea is a really great idea, but i agree with Lozinak that shooting etc. will be challenging, especially if you are a full-time student. The third idea seems like a really solid idea- you would be helping your cousin & at least you already know that you have all the material (even though it will be time consuming.

The first and the third ideas could be incorporated into one great idea. You could do a campaign for your cousin's photography business.

  4. stephanie guenin - so not going to lie, i think i relate to you the most out of the 23432809 ppl in our lecture. i also am very vague with what i want to do but i remember when i first started college i told everyone i wanted to "graphic design" but specifically in advertisement or my dream (music albums and set design). i like your ideas and how they all could possible go completely different routes. i'm interested in seeing where you go with your ideas thus far (especially the advertisement) and definitely wouldn't mind working with you! if you in?

It'd be great if you could do a marketing campaign for the photography business, complete with a handful of very short web videos.

It's always nice to get a good feel for the people you hire to do photography, especially for weddings, because it's such a huge, intimant moment in people's lives. Having videos on their site showing that they are super easy-going, professional and passionate photographers would really help them in the long run--that and you'd be getting a killer capstone out of it!

  9. I like your ideas, especially #1 and #3. I think its great if your capstone can be something you can immediately launch into the real world as soon as its finished. Perhaps you can find another small business to advertise that wouldn't be too hard. I wish you luck whatever you do!

  10. I vote for #3. It would be a great opportunity to do most or all of the things in idea #1, but you can also show that you're able to work with real clients, even when there's difficult circumstances like distance and time problems.

I would go for a documentary idea. I've had one in the past that I wanted to do but never got around to it. There used to be this towing company that hired spies to sit in parking lots around the city of Indianapolis and when they saw that people left the parking lot they called the towing company to come pick it up. However - they did this even if they walked across the street from the parking lot for a minute. I got burned by this and wanted to make a documentary exposing them. They since have gotten burned on a class action suit but I still think it would be interesting to make a film discussing the audacity of running such an operation.

  14. Hey Hillary,

If PR and marketing is what you want to do in the future I think number 1 should be what you do. However, if you are passionate about making documentaries there are many more creative routes you could take with that. Whatever you choose I think you have some solid ideas going.

FYI, the plural of medium is media, unless you're referring to the women who deal in afterlife matters.

  16. Jessica Faux - I would go for the documentary. Show's people you are willing to go all the way for your projects.

  17. Katie Strauss-I really like your first idea, it would really give you an opportunity to explore the different mediums and companies would really dig the fact that you know how to use them.

  18. randy taylor- i say you should combine ideas one and two. since your cousin's business is in need of some marketing revamping, you should take advantage of it, but also figure out some new ways to approach the project through the blending of different mediums. this combination has potential to produce some very professional and impressive results.

  19. I like the first idea. An ad campaign made up of various mediums sounds like it could be very interesting. I think that Randy's idea of combining the ideas could be a good one.
